This project saw myself and fellow artist Martha facilitate weekly sessions in mixed-media storytelling and collaborative creation, exploring rail travel in all its glory — past, present and future.
Each session gave young people the opportunity to truly delve into creativity without expectations or a restrictive structure. Instead, we encouraged them to follow their ideas, experiment with different materials and see where their creativity could lead them. The outcomes were joyful, imaginative and wonderfully varied, and it was fantastic to see each young person grow in confidence and feel so proud of what they had created.
Throughout the project, we enjoyed rail-themed school trips, co-created large-scale artworks and supported the young people to develop their own personal bodies of work. Each week, they were encouraged to explore different creative mediums to tell stories, share ideas and dream about what railway travel could look and feel like within our communities.
The young people’s work will be exhibited at HOME MCR in 2027, creating an exciting opportunity to celebrate their creativity and share their voices with a wider audience.
